Use your attic space
It's much easier than you might think to utilize that unused attic in your house. For years, I had always wanted to store some stuff in the attic of my house, but my attic is unfinished, consisting of just rafters, floor joints, and insulation - no floor. When I was a kid, my father installed plywood flooring in our attic, and I just remember that it was quite a big job. I'm not very handy, and I probably wouldn't even be able to bring home any large sheets of plywood in my small car, so my attic remained unused. But a simple google search on attic floors led me to an easy way to put a basic floor down in my attic. There are some companies out there who sell modular flooring systems that are easy to install - you don't even need to do any measuring. The flooring consists of individual pre-fabricated plastic squares that screw directly into the attic floor joists. These squares come in two sizes - either 16"x16" or 16"x24" depending on the distance between your attic floor joists. The way the panels are designed allows them to fit together so that you can easily put down a heavy duty floor strong enough for you to walk on and to store heavy stuff. You can order the panels via mail order (I bought mine thru Amazon), and they literally install in minutes. The only tool you need is an electric screwdriver (you wouldn't want to screw these in by hand). In one day I was able to put up a nice floor covering about half of my attic and was able to put all that unused space to work as storage. |
